Are you one of a growing population of coffee aficionados? If so, you may want to try your hand at home roasting your coffee beans. All of the coffee sold in retail stores, and even most of the premium coffees sold online, offer a limited selection of specific roasts – usually “Dark” and “Medium”, and now occasionally a “Light” roast. But what if you prefer the flavor of a coffee roasted to somewhere between that “Dark” and “Medium” roast?
At Hawaii’s Local Buzz, we sell green Hawaiian Ka’u coffee beans so customers can roast them at home to taste. There are several home roasting methods, ranging from the use of specialty equipment to re-purposing the simple popcorn popper.
You can find instructions here for home roasting your green coffee beans on an outdoor gas grill with a stainless steel popcorn popper, which can be a good starting point if you don’t want to invest in a roaster right away. The more specialized home roasters, however, are easier to use and can give you more control over the roasting process. When we want to do a test roast or roast a very small sample of coffee here at Hawaii’s Local Buzz we use a small fluid-bed roaster from Nesco.
Home roasting is not for everyone, as it’s a very time-consuming process, but it is a lot of fun if you want to try something new. Don’t worry if you don’t have the time to home roast your beans; at Hawaii’s Local Buzz we always roast our beans in small batches to ensure the best flavor possible.
